Many years ago I studied German at the Goethe Institute in a small Bavarian town called Murnau. There was ice and snow and I loved skiing and ice-skating across the frozen lake in winter, all the while attending classes. Then I fell in love - or thought I did! It all went horribly wrong, and at the time a fellow student and friend, Rosa, said, "Come to Spain with me. You'll love the people."
How right she was! I went to Spain for two weeks...and ended up staying 8 1/2 years! From the moment I arrived in Valencia, until the moment I left Madrid - where I spent 5 1/2 years working in a multinational advertising agency, Saatchi & Saatchi Compton - I was seduced by the Spanish lifestyle and people.
Not only that, but I fell in love with the language, which little by little I learned until I was fluent.
The Spanish language is "hermosa" (beautiful)! There are so many nuances and flavours and colours to it. As far as I am concerned, it fits in perfectly with the artist mindset. It is intelligent, imaginative, varied, hypnotic, passionate, dramatic, sensitive, soothing. It is a most beautiful language.
I have recently re-immersed myself in the language, and am reading Love In the Time of Cholera at last, in the original Spanish version.
If anyone reading this post has a love of language, or a desire to travel to Spanish speaking countries, I urge you to visit this site:
http://www.learnspanishdvdsite.com
- which will give you a free 6 day trial to learn Spanish and allow you to learn either online or with DVDs.
Meanwhile, happy creating!
Margot
